The creative sector continues to lose some of its best to the cold clutches of death.
IT’S not been a good week in art house with the Grim Reaper continuing from where it left off in December. A former president of the Association of Nigerian Authors and Minister of State for Education, Professor Jerry Agada and prolific movie director, Chico Ejiro, were some of the high-profile departures from the creative sector in the last month of 2020.
But despite prayers for a halt to the deaths, two other eminent art personalities passed days apart during the week. Veteran journalist and former Vice President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Otunba Eddie Aderinokun passed on Sunday, January 3 at 80. ....

TAMPAN, practitioners mourn iconic actress Orisabunmi

The stage and movie industry in Nigeria was thrown into deep mourning on Wednesday with the news that the iconic actress, Folake Aremu, who is popular as Orisabunmi, had passed on. The fiery actress who was once married to another legend of the stage and screen Jimoh Aliu at the early stages of her career, reportedly died on Tuesday night at her Ibadan residence after a brief illness same day.
Aged 61, the actress earned the alias Orisabunmi after she delightfully interpreted the role of a pacifying priestess Orisabunmi in a 1987 TV series Arelu produced by her former husband Jimoh Aliu who passed on in October 2019. She was later to feature as the priestess Orisabunmi in most stage and screen production of the ’90s. ....

Famous for playing the role of a priestess with magical powers expressed in incantations and some other mysterious manifestations which had endeared her to her fans for many years, late Folake Aremu, popularly known as ‘Orishabunmi’, rose to fame in the 1980s when she starred in the TV series ‘Arelu’, alongside her ex-husband, the late veteran actor Jimoh Aliu.
Orishabunmi first appeared in a stage play was ‘Ori Ma Binu’, but her role as Orishabunmi in ‘Arelu’ made her a household name in the industry. Some of her iconic roles include; ‘Asabi’ in Oluwerimagboojo” and the priestess in ‘Ayanmo Eda’. ....

Breaking News | Breaking News Onishola, brother of late actress, Orisabunmi dies 24 hours after she passed on

Coach Steve Onishola, the Technical Director of Kwara Falcons Basketball Club of Ilorin, is dead.
Onishola died barely 24 hours after his younger sister, Folake Aremu, a Nollywood actress, popularly known as Orisabunmi, passed on.
The State Chairman of the association, Dr. Joseph Adeyemo, confirmed the death of Onishola in Ilorin on Thursday.
The late basketball coach was said to have passed on at 71 following a brief illness.
The deceased was the Manager of Falcons on different occasions before he was appointed the club’s technical director. He was part of the Falcons’ team that secured promotion for the club to the elite division in 2013. ....

Sanwo-Olu expresses concern over rising COVID-19 cases

Rattled by the rate of community spread of COVID-19 among citizens, Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday expressed concern over rising cases of confirmed persons in the state.

In a note he posted on his social media handles, he wrote: “Lagos, there is an urgent need for us to be more circumspect in the way we live, interact and socialise with our friends and family.
“Many people are ignoring COVID-19 warnings and guidelines, thereby exposing themselves and others to the virus. We are well into the second wave of the pandemic. Yesterday (Tuesday), Lagos scarily recorded its highest number of infections in one day – 712. We have already recorded a frightening spike in infection cases. This spike brings positive cases to a total of 32,720 in Lagos alone. ....
