Cleophus Robinson’s fine “God be With You.” But the better singer in the family was probably his sister Josephine. Cleophus and Josephine, who recorded under the name of Sister Josephine James, recorded numerous superb albums of gospel duets over the decades, including their biggest hit, “Pray for Me.”

The Rev. Cleophus Robinson could have been one of gospel music’s superstars – but darn it, St. Louis was just too good to leave for very long. The Mississippi native spent 40 year as pastor of the famed Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in St. Loo. He had a weekly television show that aired for 20 years. And that’s on top of multiple, long-running radio shows.

When Sister Rosetta Tharpe was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, most musicians and historians felt like it was about 20 years too late. Tharpe is considered not only one of the founders of gospel music – but rock itself.
But in truth, she’s truly one of a kind, an influential, iconic artist who really only sounds like herself. Propelled by her confident guitar-picking, Tharpe’s songs – including “Didn’t It Rain,” “This Train,” “Up Above My Head,” “Strange Things Happening Every Day” and dozens more are a unique combination of gospel, spirituals, swing, jump jazz and . yes . the beginnings of rock’n’roll.
