Longtime Pennsylvania horsemen Don and Dave Wiest and Ed Kimmel developed a champion two-year-old trotter last season in the filly Love Muffin, who sold to Team Orange Crush over the winter after becoming the Pennsylvania Stallion Series championship. Now it looks like the longtime partners may be ready for another good season with baby trotters, as they took events for both sexes as The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono hosted the two-year-olds for the first time on Wednesday morning (June 2).
First was the filly Gumdrop Hanover, who came a last half in :58.1 to win her bow in 2:01.4 for Kimmel and co-owner-trainer-driver David Wiest. The baby is a daughter of Bar Hopping out of Grits N Seven, a half-sister to $1.6M-winning champion Royalty For Life.
Tempus Seelster and Enzio captured their respective feature events at Pompano Park on Tuesday (April 27) while Dave Ingraham hot a grand slam as he drove four winners on the card.
Tempus Seelster and Ingraham teamed to take the $13,000 Open Mare Pace, using a :27.4 final quarter to edge by the pacesetting favourite Prairie Westerngal in the final strides to score by three-quarter lengths in 1:53.1. Beach Journey, in the garden spot all the way, finished third a length away, while Roll With Angel was fourth after a ground-saving journey and Tale Abit Of Life rallied from last turning for home to pick up the nickel.
Casies Believer, brilliantly handled by Joe Chindano, Jr., split horses in deep stretch to capture Pompano Park’s $11,000 Open for Mares on Tuesday (April 20), stopping the timer in 1:53.
The six-year-old daughter of Betterthancheddar eked the narrow win by stalking leader Prairie Westerngal throughout the mile from the garden spot, leaving the cozy pocket when they straightened for the drive home. The pocket popper held off a determined Tempus Seelster by a length with Prairie Westerngal another half length away. Roll With Angel finished fourth while Evas Sports Czech picked up the final award in the classy sextet.
As usual, it was Prairie Westerngal leaving with her sharp early foot, opening enough daylight to allow Casies Believer to find the spot in the garden right behind. Through an opening panel of :27.4, positions remained virtually unchanged through the :57.3 half with only Tempus Seelster gaining a spot from fifth into fourth.
