DNR agents kill six rescue animals being cared for by Michigan famer during "rescue operation"


Department of Natural Resources (DNR) agents recently killed six animals while conducting an “animal rescue operation” at a Petoskey farm in Emmet County, Michigan. As part of the operation, the agents also arrested Kei Ju Farm and Rescue owner Julie Hall.
The DNR received a complaint stating that Hall was rehabilitating wild animals on the farm, which was not a licensed rehabilitation facility in the state.
Lt. Jim Gorno of the District 3 division of the DNR said Hall had already been warned about rehabilitating wild animals prior to the complaint. As the complaint followed a previous warning, the DNR moved forward with charges. ....

Heed ice safety warnings | News, Sports, Jobs


No one should consider themselves an expert on the ice.
That’s the message Lt. Jim Gorno, law enforcement division supervisor for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, gave to News staff writer Julie Riddle for a recent story about ice safety.
Experienced ice fishermen and snowmobilers “know their stuff,” Gorno told Riddle, “but 99% of them have never dropped into freezing cold water.”
Already this winter, a side-by-side, a four-wheeler, and several snowmobiles have gone through ice in northern Michigan, Gorno said.
Even those with years of know-how should respect the ice and its inherent dangers, and Gorno recommends the following: ....

PRESQUE ISLE Nearly every day in recent weeks, shanties, snowmobiles, and four-wheelers have peppered the white ice of Grand Lake as intrepid ice fishing enthusiasts take advantage of cold temperatures and solid ice after a warmer-than-usual December.
Locals with years of experience may know the keys to safe ice fishing, but safety precautions are still in order, and even long-timers need to remember that no ice is safe ice, said Lt. Jim Gorno, law enforcement division supervisor for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. ....
