BARNESVILLE Local activist Jill Hunkler, who has long spoken in opposition to the natural gas and oil industry, will testify Thursday Earth Day 2021 before the U.S. House Subcommittee on the Environment.
The discussion will focus on whether the federal government and international community should repeal fossil fuel subsidies. Hunkler will give virtual testimony along with a panel including youth climate activist Greta Thunberg, spokespersons from Harvard University and Stockholm Environmental Institute’s Climate Policy Program.

CLARINGTON Mountaineer NGL Storage LLC is exploring green options for its Appalachian Storage Hub in Monroe County.
The natural gas storage facility is gauging interest in the possibility of storing carbon-free hydrogen in its new storage hub near Clarington in Monroe County. The company announced its interest in green hydrogen storage earlier this month and is looking to see if there is a market for it in the local region. The initiative comes after Long Ridge Energy Terminal announced its plans to convert its Hannibal power plant to a green hydrogen fuel source.

Plans for a Mountaineer Natural Gas Liquids storage facility near the Ohio River in Monroe County are raising fears of pollution and long-term damage to the area and its people.
A virtual meeting was held Thursday evening in which environmental groups shared information and comments, with the overall goal of telling the public to reach out to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources during a 30-day comment period that ends Feb. 6.
PTT Global Chemical America has reached an agreement with Mountaineer NGL, which intends to use salt caverns to store liquid components of the local natural gas stream, such as ethane, underground. That ethane would serve as feedstock for a PTTGCA ethane cracker plant if it is built as proposed a few miles to the north. A final investment decision about the cracker has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE Jill Hunkler of Barnesville spoke to the Belmont County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday, asking members to further oppose a plan to install two saltwater injection wells at the intersection of U.S. 40 and Ohio 331.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued permits late in 2020 to New Jersey-based Omni Energy Co. permitting the wells. Multiple local residents and officials have objected and raised a variety of concerns ranging from pollution to ground stability and increased truck traffic.
There are several residences, businesses and county agencies in the surrounding area, along with the Belmont Correctional Institution state prison.
