Captain Mike Gerry says Lake Guntersville is producing typical late-winter fishing due to the 45-degree water, with the bite slow and scattered on largemouths. However, he said that the fish that do bite are large fish.
“We’re mostly throwing reaction baits, Picasso spinners and bladed jigs, Spro rattlebaits and Little John crankbaits and also Tightline Swimjigs,” said Gerry. “It’s a lot of casting between strikes but anglers who work at it and stick with it will catch some nice bass.”

From Lake Guntersville, Captain Mike Gerry reports that the usual winter bite on Rat-L-Traps and similar lipless crankbaits is on at the lake, but lots of floating grass makes getting a weed-free cast in a challenge. He suggests going to single-hook lures including the Picasso blade baits and Tightline Swimjigs. He said best action has been off the edge of the grass lines at 7 to 9 feet. He also says that where there’s one bass at this time of year, there may be a dozen the fish are schooled tightly. Warmer weather this week along with showers could turn on the bite in area lakes once the storms have passed. Bass have been hanging on shad schools at the larger lakes including those in the TVA system find the bait by following the gulls, or scope them out with big screen sonar and fish the bait pods with 3-inch swimbaits, similar-sized crankbaits or lipless cranks.
According to Guntersville guide Mike Gerry, from now through February will also be a good time to try lipless crankbaits like the Spro Aruku Shad over areas where hydrilla and milfoil have died back. Gerry says the fish particularly like areas where the new growth has just started to sprout from bottom, typically in 4 to 8 feet, during warm spells in late winter and early spring.
