Jewish and Palestinian Montrealers talk peace, war and bringing the violence to an end

Quebecers with roots to both sides of the conflict are having difficult conversations about peace between Israel and the Palestinian territories and how to get there.

National Assembly unanimously condemns anti-Semitism

The Quebec National Assembly unanimously passed a resolution condemning anti-Semitic incidents in the province. The resolution says that the National Assembly “firmly condemn the threats, violence and aggression towards Quebecers of Jewish faith, which have increased in the last weeks; that it reaffirm that in a free and democratic society, all can demonstrate or express an opinion, with respect, safety and dignity; that it reiterate the need to maintain a healthy, democratic debate regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; and finally, that it recall that violence is intolerable towards anyone at any time.” In recent days, members of the Jewish community were attacked and threatened physically and on social media in downtown Montreal, Côte St. Luc, Outremont, Hampstead and Westmount during the Israel-Hamas conflict, including by pro-Palestinian protesters. Incidents of vandalism against synagogues had taken place in the past year as well.

CIJA disappointed with Bill 21 court decision

This includes police officers, judges, Crown prosecutors and, in most cases, teachers and principals. The court made exceptions for English school boards, which can set their own policy; and Members of the National Assembly. The Quebec government is appealing the ruling — Premier François Legault said Quebec should have one set of common values. CIJA Quebec Vice President, Eta Yudin, said her organization is deeply disappointed by today’s Quebec Superior Court decision to uphold provisions of Bill 21 that severely restrict religious freedom and the ability of Jewish Quebecers and other faith-based communities to freely pursue careers in the public sector.”
