Youth activism is on the rise, and as students at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay in San Francisco, we wanted to join the movement.
Plus, with the divisiveness in society these days, discussing politics at school often can feel taboo. We wanted to change that, which is another reason we started the Young Activists Club to create the changes we want to see in the world
and to empower the youth in our community.
The club is a home base for political activists at JCHS that encourages youth to get involved in advocacy work. We want to do everything in our power to empower and inspire our peers to promote social justice. Even though we are young, we are the future. Our community, our country and our planet need us. ....

Bay Area authors win Jewish children's book awards – J.

A teacher’s coming-of-age novel and a rabbi’s picture book about Jewish yoga are among the books by San Francisco authors named in this year’s Sydney Taylor Book Awards for the best in Jewish children’s literature.
Evan Wolkenstein, who teaches at Jewish Community High School of the Bay, won the middle-grades gold medal for his book “Turtle Boy,” and Rabbi Mychal Copeland, who leads Congregation Sha’ar Zahav in San Francisco, was awarded one of two silver medals in picture books for “I Am the Tree of Life: My Jewish Yoga Book.”
The awards, given by the Association of Jewish Libraries, were announced Monday at the American Library Association’s virtual midwinter meeting. ....

One by one, the California blows against the SAT and ACT kept coming.
First UC Berkeley announced last May that it wanted to disregard SAT and ACT test scores in admissions decisions for some students in a pilot study. The same day, University of California regents unanimously voted to phase out the tests over five years. After that, Caltech nixed them for at least two years. And in September, a California state judge ordered UC to immediately suspend all use of test scores in admissions.
Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic leveled its own hits upending the testing environment nationwide by severely limiting testing opportunities and prompting the massive California State University system and three-fourths of U.S. colleges to suspend testing requirements for fall 2021 applicants. ....
