'Peculiar, spiky, yellowish': New pygmy grasshopper discovered in Mindanao

The newly identified species was named Tegotettix derijei, also known as Mindanao horned pygmy devil.
It was studied and described by scientists Victor B. Amoroso, Alma Baguhin Mohagan, and Romeo Rogano Patano Jr. of Central Mindanao University (CMU), Josef Tumbrinck of University of Münster, and Josip Skejo of University of Zagreb, and published in the international peer-reviewed scientific journal Zootaxa in its February 2021 issue.
The Mindanao horned pygmy devil is described as a “new peculiar, spiky, and yellowish species” of the genus Tegotettix Hancock from Davao region.
Of the 10 species under genus Tegotettix Hancock, Tegotettix derijei is the third known species in the Philippines. The other two species are Tegotettix corniculatus and Tegotettix sagittarius. ....

DA-10, CMU push hybrid rice technology for higher yield

MARAMAG, Bukidnon, Feb. 10 (PIA) In line with the Hybridization Program which aims to increase farm efficiency and attain rice sufficiency, the Department of Agriculture–Regional Field Office 10 (DA-RFO)-10, together with Central Mindanao University (CMU), led the ceremonial planting for the Hybrid Rice Derby.
Audy G. Maagad, Field Operations Division chief who represented DA-10 Regional Executive Director Carlene C. Collado on Thursday’s event in Musuan, Maramag, Bukidnon, emphasized the benefits of using hybrid rice.
He said it is a good option to increase farmers’ production because it can produce as much as 10-12 tons per hectare.
“With hybrid rice and farm mechanization in land preparation, transplanting, and harvesting, the production cost is reduced while the yield increases. Thus, rice farmers can earn more,” Maagad said. ....

RDC-X tackles key dev't, issues in NorMin

CAGAYAN DE ORO, Feb 5 (PIA) – To further improve evidence-based decision and policy making in Northern Mindanao, the Regional Development Council (RDC)-10 held its 2nd Research Dissemination Forum to share results and recommendations conducted by state universities and colleges on key developments and issues in the region.
“The presentation of outputs resulting from extensive research and inquiry is not merely a showcase of academic dexterity but is actually a show of commitment towards addressing issues that hamper our pursuit of inclusive development and lasting peace,” shared RDC-10 Secretariat Mylah Faye Aurora Cariño during her key message.
