During the state legislative session, would-be boosters bring forth proposals hoping to elevate their cause to the list of officially recognized Oregon state symbols. 
Some even withstand scrutiny and move forward to join the ranks of the Western Meadowlark (state bird) and the hazelnut (state nut).
During the 2021 legislative session, there are at least two such proposals: House Concurrent Resolution 1 seeks to recognize the onion as the state vegetable, and HCR 9 would designate rescued shelter dogs and cats as the official state pet.
