Volusia County to look at adding more dog beaches

Volusia County will explore expanding beach access for dogs, potentially adding more dog-friendly beaches in the Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach areas.
The council voted unanimously to explore the possibilities, without precise instructions on when to return or where to look, other than that new dog beach locations, if approved, would be accessible to residents of the northern parts of the county.

Volusia to look at adding more dog beaches

Lowry, however, made the motion to zero in on options for residents in the northern part of the county.
Patricia Boswell, administrator for the Florida Department of Health in Volusia County, cautioned against allowing dogs on the beaches.
She said the top concerns were animal bites and sand contaminated by fecal matter leading to parasitic infections.
Jean Olbert, a biologist for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said FWC’s position is that dogs be prohibited from beaches with sensitive wildlife species or habitat, especially during critical periods.
It is important to note that the beaches in Volusia County provide breeding, resting, and foraging habitat for state threatened shorebirds, seabirds, and gopher tortoises, as well as federally protected beach mice and sea turtles, she wrote in an email to county staff. ....
