Opinion | How to Protect Sex Workers

In “Real Protection for Massage Workers” (Op-Ed, March 29), Elena Shih promotes the decriminalization of prostitution. While there is broad agreement to support decriminalization of those bought and sold in the sex trade, there is a divide over the decriminalization of the johns who buy sex and the pimps who profiteer from selling it. These agents of the industry don’t need protection; it is all of us who need protection from them.
A less drastic and more effective way to protect all women who suffer these abuses is to decriminalize them, but not their perpetrators. Widespread police abuse would also be addressed by this approach, pioneered by Sweden and known as the equality model. It would provide protection and support for those who have been coerced by drugs and poverty, if not brute force into prostitution. ....

How Covid could be the long overdue shake-up needed by the aid sector

This year one in every 33 people across the world will need humanitarian assistance. That is a rise of 40% from last year, according to the UN. More than half of the countries requiring aid to help deal with the coronavirus pandemic are already in protracted crises, coping with conflict or natural disasters.
Even before Covid-19 threw decades of progress on extreme poverty, healthcare and education into reverse, aid budgets were heading in the wrong direction. In 2020, the UN had just 48% of its $38.5bn (£28bn) in funding appeals met, compared with 63% of $29bn sought in 2019. ....
