Controversy continues to plague Ontonagon Village Council | News, Sports, Jobs

ONTONAGON The village of Ontonagon continues to face controversy. With the recent dismissal of its village manager, Joe Erickson, along with appointments of two trustees, the village president appears to be shifting the blame to others.
With three applications for the two vacant trustee positions, the council appointed Mike Rebholz and former Trustee Mike Mogan. Rebholz had been voted down by the council in the past to be a Planning Commissioner when Rebholz stated his support for allowing a retail marijuana business in the village. At The council has since retracted their position, culminating in the appointment of Rebholz to the Planning Commission. ....

ONTONAGON The passing of Ontonagon Herald owner and publisher, and recent village trustee, Maureen Guzek was memorialized during Village President Tony Smydra’s president’s report. After being appointed to the council, Guzek was elected to the trustee position during this past November’s general election.
With the unexpected death of Guzek, the village council now has two vacancies to fill. After getting elected, and not making a single meeting, Jessica Huntzinger resigned her position in January. Huntzinger had missed all five meetings after being elected.
Smydra claimed Huntzinger had been sworn in on Dec. 11. Video and audio tapes of the meetings since Dec. 11, along with her swearing-in, do not seem to reflect this, neither does the council minutes. ....

ONTONAGON Â While the actors have changed over the years, the movie is the same. The Ontonagon Village Council has had different council presidents, and trustees since Aspirus took over the management of Ontonagon Memorial Hospital.
However when Aspirus became the owner of the hospital, the responsibility of the Municipal Employment Retirement System (MERS) financial obligation to past and some current employees remained the responsibility of the village of Ontonagon.
The amount of the MERS debt changes with whomever one talks too, but it is safe to say the debt is around $1,000,000. The total debt is not the only issue that is challenged from meeting to meeting, month after month. The other issue is whether it is solely the MERS responsibility for the village’s financial problem, or as one village taxpayer questioned, “is whether the village council and village manager spending more than the village has?’ ....

ONTONAGON What was expected, addressed at an Ontonagon Village Council Meeting, and had posts on social media, came to fruition. With no one on the ballot this past November, Jessica Huntzinger was elected to the council, but had never attended a single meeting.
Huntzinger’s first meeting on the council was to be on Nov. 10, 2020. Monday night’s meeting was the fifth meeting that she did not attend. She failed to make a single meeting.
Before the Nov. 3 election, it was known that she had taken a nursing job outside of the Upper Peninsula. During Public Comment an Ontonagon village resident questioned whether Huntzinger should be on the ballot, or let it be known that she took a job that would make it difficult for her to attend meetings. ....

The Ontonagon Village Council will meet via tele-conference tonight. The question remains whether issues addressing the council, village residents, and village businesses will be resolved.
The issue that has been in front of the council for over 2 years has been the village’s financial problems. One problem that village manager and council members have had to deal with is the village’s obligation to the Municipal Employees Retirement System (MERS).
The MERS obligation has been reported to be in the $1 million range. It stems from the village selling its hospital to Aspirus. However in the sale, the village remained responsible for past and current employees. ....
