UK sends gunboats to Jersey as French vessels gather in post-Brexit fishing protest

THE UK has sent in Royal Navy vessels to patrol waters around Jersey as French boats gathered to protest over post-Brexit fishing rules.
HMS Severn and HMS Tamar have been deployed by the UK Government to “monitor the situation” at the Channel Island.
French maritime minister Annick Girardin had warned on Tuesday that the country is ready to take “retaliatory measures”, accusing Jersey of dragging its feet over issuing new licences to French boats.
The UK has been criticised for the move, with some seeing it as gunboat diplomacy designed to boost Tory electoral chances today. ....

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday sent two Royal Navy patrol boats to Jersey over concerns that French fishers could blockade its main port in an escalating post-Brexit row.
France on Tuesday said that it was weighing its response after the UK imposed rules governing access for French fishing boats near the Channel Islands, and said it could involve the electricity supply via underwater cables. ....

UK-France fishing row escalates as protest descends on Jersey


British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has sent two Navy patrol vessels to Jersey over concerns that French fishermen could blockade its main port in an escalating post-Brexit row.
Meanwhile French fishermen plan to converge on the island’s main port St Helier on Thursday (6 May), although authorities have said they do not intend to block access.
On Thursday morning, around 100 French fishing vessels will sail to Jersey port to protest over the issuing of the licences, the head of fisheries for the Normandy region, Dimitri Rogoff, told AFP.
Rogoff said however that they would not try to blockade the port and would return to France in the afternoon. ....

SUPERMARKET bosses in Jersey have warned shelves will be empty by Saturday unless the Royal Navy can stop French trawlers blockading the island s port.
Stocks of bread, fruit, fresh meat and vegetables will be gone if freight ships cannot deliver their crucial daily supplies, CEO of Jersey Co-op Mark Cox said.
