SAN JOSE Contemporary Asian Theater Scene (CATS) announces the Dr. Jerry Hiura Inspirational Award ($500) for local high school and college artists.

With “What It Means to Be AAPI” as the theme, submit your videos, films, performance, spoken word, poetry, essay, painting, comics, etc. You must be a current high school or college student in the Bay Area to participate.
Submission period ends Aug. 1. Winner or winners will be announced on Sept. 4. Presentation of awards will take place in October during the Silicon Valley Asian Pacific Film Festival. ....

2020 has been a year of extraordinary loss and suffering. As The Rafu
presents its annual listing of passings in the community, we offer our condolences to all those who have lost loved ones in this most difficult of years.

Sumako Azuma II
Sumako Azuma II (Janice Aiso Edesa), 61, on July 24. The North American representative to Azuma Ryū in Japan, she taught Japanese classical dance for 45 years, training 14 students to earn the natori degree and one to earn the shihan degree. ....

THIS OLD HAUNT: The Sept. 16, 2020 column about Cambrian Park Plaza hit home for many Alleys readers this year.

Even though 2020 was one of the worst years on record, the Alley denizen did not give up. He celebrated local heroes, hit a personal milestone, mourned the dead, hit a few unexpected home runs and found gratitude.
As the pandemic settled in, local folks did the best they could to soldier through it all. In fact, I used that phrase a few times. Scott s Seafood, Tony & Alba s, Academic Coffee, Streetlight Records, New Ballet San Jose and the public library all showed up in this space. In the latter case, library employees 3D-printed masks for front-line workers. No one knew how long shelter-in-place would last. ....
