Hubbard County Veteran Services Office receives $10K grant

The Hubbard County Board recently accepted a $10,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Hubbard County Board recently accepted a $10,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.
Hubbard County Veteran Services Officer (VSO) Jerry Bjerke told county commissioners, “Within the grant request, I had to submit a budget, a proposal on what I’m going to spend the money for. I’ll let you know right now, I put $2,000 in for a veterans event this summer.”
Due to COVID-19, Bjerke said it was unclear whether that event could be held.
His proposed budget also sets aside $4,000 for him and assistant VSO Darius Simon to receive training, “wherever that may be.” ....

COVID-19 is impacting area veterans

Hubbard County Veterans Service Officer Darius Simon acknowledges that some local veterans have died recently from COVID-19 complications, and that the pandemic is having an impact on the veteran community.
“A lot of our veterans are Vietnam era, and some of the things that they were exposed to while their time of service in Vietnam has led to residual effects that have been lifelong-lasting,” said Simon. “They have a lot of underlying issues that are there, that are contributing factors to COVID-19 being so severe to them.” ....
