American Red Cross urges Michiganders for blood donations during Black History Month


LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The American Red Cross is urging Michiganders to roll up their sleeves and donate blood this February in honor of Black History Month.
Regional Communications Manager for The American Red Cross Michigan Region, Todd Kulman says that blood, platelets and plasma are greatly needed and that COVID-19 survivors are also needed to address a convalescent plasma shortage, because they may have antibodies that could help patients battling the virus.
The American Red Cross honors the accomplishments of both Dr. Charles Drew and Dr. Jerome Holland for their contributions to the Red Cross and for patients in need of lifesaving blood products. ....

RICHMOND, Va. For decades, they dedicated their lives to helping others through the American Red Cross, leaving a strong legacy. One, that the American Red Cross celebrates today.
This Black History Month, officials are encouraging Virginians to donate blood in honor of African Americans like Dr. Jerome Holland and Dr. Charles Drew.
Dr. Holland was an educator and former US Ambassador to Sweden. He had strong ties to Virginia, even serving as President of Hampton Institute (which is now Hampton University). ....

American Red Cross blood drives slated in St. Lawrence County

In honor of Black History Month this February, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors, and especially those who have recovered from COVID-19, to give blood to honor the legacies of African Americans like Dr. Charles Drew and Dr. Jerome Holland.
Their passion for helping improve the lives of patients in need of lifesaving blood products is carried on through dedicated blood donors, blood drive sponsors, volunteers and Red Cross employees. Drew, an African American surgeon, was the medical director of the first Red Cross blood bank in 1941. Drew’s research about the storage and shipment of blood plasma proved that blood could be stored for transfusions. Many of the processes he developed are still in use today. ....
