Grammy Week continues to highlight underrepresented voices with the Inaugural Black Music Collective Event

March 12, 2021 in Lifestyle, Music The Recording Academy is living up to their diversity and inclusion initiatives by hosting events to highlight Black voices in the industry and the messages they wish to share with the world. Gina Nguyen | Daily Trojan. As the countdown to the Grammys continues, the Recording Academy has been hosting multiple events promoting diversity and inclusion in the music industry. One of which, held Wednesday evening, was the Inaugural Black Music Collective Event, celebrating Black voices in music and creative industries. Music industry veterans, activists and actors alike came together to discuss the impact that Black creators have on these industries and their strides to create a more inclusive environment within them.

Some of the industry’s top executives spoke briefly about the importance of the Black Music Collective and goals and accomplishments made in the culture of Black music. These leaders included Grammy-winning producers Quincy Jones and Jimmy Jam; Debra Lee, former chairman and CEO of BET Networks; Jeriel Johnson, Black Music Collective executive sponsor; and Riggs Morales, Black Music Collective chair and Atlantic Records executive. The panelists had lengthy discussions regarding their roles in Black music and how the landscape of social justice is looking in modern times. Jimmy Jam said, “I think the Black Music Collective is a great place to have conversations and for those people, the music community is important to them, the Black community is important to them, and those intersections are important to them. To me, this is a time where we have a bit of time to maybe pause a little bit, maybe take a little more time to figure out what’s important. What’s important is maybe

H.E.R., Freddie Gibbs, Yolanda Adams to Perform at Black Music Collective Event During Grammy Week Jem Aswad, provided by FacebookTwitterEmail The Black Music Collective (BMC), a newly launched initiative by the Recording Academy, will host its inaugural Grammy Week event in celebration of Black creators’ and professionals’ contributions to the music industry. The event will feature performances by H.E.R., Yolanda Adams, PJ Morton and rapper and producer duo Freddie Gibbs & Alchemist. In addition to performances, the event will feature reflections from industry execs, including Universal Music Group EVP Jeff Harleston, veteran songwriter-producer Jimmy Jam, legendary producer Quincy Jones and former BET chief Debra Lee.
