ANC discusses homelessness and potential solutions


A local governing body invited city officials and experts to discuss homelessness in the District, its causes and potential solutions during its monthly meeting Wednesday.
The Foggy Bottom and West End Advisory Neighborhood Commission hosted the director of the D.C. Department of Human Services and three advocates for homeless people who said systemic issues like a lack of affordable housing have exacerbated homelessness in D.C., while housing reforms will be necessary in getting people off the streets.  The ANC also heard updates about the University’s fall planning progress, passed a resolution to promote sections of a police reform report and approved outdoor renovations at The Shops at 2000 Penn. ....

Traffic deaths nearly double since this time last year

Traffic fatalities in the District have nearly doubled since this time last year.
Sixteen people have been killed in traffic-related accidents so far this year, nearly double the nine deaths registered at this time last year, according to data from the Metropolitan Police Department. Local leaders said city officials should improve biking and walking infrastructure and implement tougher traffic enforcement to curb the rise in deaths.
Nine pedestrians, two cyclists and three motorists have died in accidents in the District this year, according to District Department of Transportation data, which accounts for 15 of the 16 fatalities in 2021. In one such incident, a cyclist was struck and killed by a car on Massachusetts Avenue last month just hours after tweeting about unsaf ....

Bowser discusses the coronavirus, statehood at ANC meeting

Bowser said indoor theaters will open at 25 percent capacity, restaurants can host live entertainment outside and recreational facilities will reopen by the first week of May.
A local governing body hosted D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser to share updates about the District’s COVID-19 mitigation efforts during a meeting Wednesday.
Bowser and several D.C. agency directors spoke at the Foggy Bottom and West End Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting, where commissioners also approved a Virginia Avenue bike lane and budgeted $12,000 in grants for local nonprofit organizations. Bowser discussed the city’s progress with reopening venues, like indoor movie theaters, and reiterated her support for D.C. statehood before the U.S. House of Representatives voted Thursday to make D.C. the 51st state. ....

Local crime plunges during COVID-19 pandemic

While violent crimes are down over the past several months, thefts in stores and vehicle break-ins are up, which local leaders attribute to reduced foot traffic and security.

Since the initial outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic last March, the number of crimes near campus has dropped by half.
GW Police Department Chief James Tate said officers have responded to fewer than 400 crimes since last March, compared to more than 1,000 crimes reported to the department in each of the two years before the pandemic. Local leaders said the decline in incidents has coincided with the reduction of public activity over the past year. ....
