County Executive Steuart Pittman gained ground on County Council member Jessica Haire in the Anne Arundel County executive race Friday after the first canvass of mail-in ballots showed the Democratic incumbent received twice as many votes from the first 11,200 votes counted.
Hummer was leading her Republican opponent Cheryl Renshaw with 68% of early votes and Election Day ballots cast, according to Maryland State Board of Election returns.

Polls will open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at dozens of locations across Anne Arundel. Ballot drop boxes will also be available until 8 p.m. Tuesday for voters to deposit ballots they had mailed to them.
Fifteen candidates seven Democrats, seven Republicans and a Libertarian are vying for seats on the seven-member council. The council currently is made up of four Democrats and three Republicans but that could change after the Nov. 8 election.
