A HUGE momentum is building up behind the revitalisation of Jersey’s historic language Jèrriais, according to the language teaching head of service.
Ben Spink was speaking at the end of a successful process to recruit three new full-time Jèrriais teachers, bringing the number of specialists who will be working in schools and the community up to seven.
‘The phase we’re in at the moment is to grow the numbers, and the models we are putting in place will be more robust in enabling us to do that,’ he explained. ‘But also we’re starting to see that schools see the value of what we are doing more. A written States question from Deputy Carina Alves revealed that of the 2,796 eligible students, 36% were tested in the first half of the spring term.
It was also revealed that one of these tests had returned a positive Covid result and one had led to a PCR test but that subsequent test had returned a negative result.
Students in years 11 to 13 in all Jersey schools and those in years 11 to 15 at Highlands College are eligible for testing, which Education Minister Jeremy Maçon, in response to the question, said was in accordance with STAC advice.
