He avoided the death penalty by taking the plea. He also pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder in the wounding of Officer Lucas Allums and for shooting at Sgt. Talana Brown. He received life in the two attempted murder convictions. Carr said the plea ends the criminal case, “but we know the effects of this defendant’s actions will be felt by the Carter family, the Birmingham Police Department and our community forever.”

Jeremy Elwin Owens, 33, avoided a possible death penalty by pleading guilty to killing Sgt. Wytasha Carter on Jan. 13, 2019, news outlets reported. He also pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the shooting of Officer Luke Allums, who recovered, and for shooting at a third officer. Owens was shot and seriously injured in an exchange of gunfire that happened as officers worked in an area where there had been a string of vehicle burglaries.

(WBRC) - The man charged with killing Birmingham Police Sgt. Wytasha Carter has entered a plea to capital murder of a law enforcement officer and two other charges. The Office of District Attorney Danny Carr confirms Jeremy Elwin Owens was sentenced to life without parole on February 22. Owens also entered a plea to two counts of attempted murder based upon the shooting of Officer Luke Allums and for shooting at Birmingham Police Sgt. Talana Brown. He is sentenced to life for each of those offenses.
