More, not fewer, affordable homes are being built - Master Builders

The Nelson, Marlborough & West Coast and Taranaki entries were announced this week.

Builders have been building more homes in the lower value brackets in recent years.
Taranaki had two entries, both in the new home up to $450,000 category and none from volume/group builders.
In contrast, Nelson, Marlborough & West Coast had five entries in the volume/group housing category, and none in the other category.
But Master Builders Association chief executive David Kelly said the relatively small number of entries did not indicate that not many cheaper houses were being built.
It would be inaccurate to draw conclusions about the market from competition entries, and more useful insights could be drawn from the association’s Master Build Guarantee information, he said. ....

Moves to tackle the housing supply problem won’t show results right away, but experts say the supply-demand equation will improve - eventually.
Years of under-building, particularly following the global financial crisis in 2008, has meant housing supply has not kept pace with a rapidly growing population.
