Taiwan seeks to be top destination for Mandarin learners from US: official

The government aims to make Taiwan the top destination for Mandarin learners from the US, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Harry Tseng (曾厚仁) said yesterday.
Tseng made the remarks at a two-day symposium, called Teaching Chinese as a Second Language in the US, which opened in Taipei yesterday, and was attended by officials and Chinese-language teaching experts.
The US-Taiwan Education Initiative, launched on Dec. 3, 2020, is to expand access to Mandarin learning to students in the US, while safeguarding academic freedom, American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Deputy Director Jeremy Cornforth said.

Bolstering engagement with the US and Japan

A majority of voters in the referendums held on Dec. 18 voted “no” on all four referendum proposals. Their rejection of the proposal to ban imports of pork from pigs fed with the additive ractopamine will have a profound effect on Taiwan’s foreign relations. The US and Japan will now have greater confidence in the ability of President Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) government to handle and resolve major political issues, as well as in the Taiwanese public’s judgement, and they will be more firmly convinced that Taiwan is a trustworthy ally.

AIT affirms US support for Taiwan, praises tech

American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Deputy Director Jeremy Cornforth yesterday affirmed the US’ support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, as he praised the nation’s technological contributions.
Cornforth made the remarks at an awards ceremony for the annual Presidential Hackathon organized by the Executive Yuan.
This year’s theme, “Sustainability 2.0 Resilient Islands,” was inspired by lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the need to create systems that are not just efficient, but also resilient.
Cornforth in his address lauded Taiwan’s commitment to fulfilling the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, despite being excluded from international organizations.
