A new year.a fresh, clean start! a joyous boy in red mittens said a quarter-century ago this week, shortly before soaring forth on the most famous sled in American arts this side of Citizen Kane. And just like that, the high-spirited 6-year-old and his best buddy were never seen again at least not in new images.
Yet the beloved duo have never really left us.

You might call Walt Kelly’s classic comic strip Pogo a combination of high and low art.
The strip  which Kelly wrote and drew from 1948 until shortly before his death in 1973  featured a menagerie of swamp-dwelling animals, including the titular opossum Pogo, that at first suggests juvenilia.
Yet the dialogue spoken by the creatures was often quite sophisticated. A keen political satirist, Kelly sent-up various major figures of his day, from Communist-hunting U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy reimagined as the wildcat Simple J. Malarkey to Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. ....
