Irba CEO Jenitha John quits over ‘negative perception’

The Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (Irba) says CEO Jenitha John has resigned less than three weeks after finance minister Tito Mboweni sacked the entire board of the auditing watchdog at the end of January.
Irba, which oversees a local audit industry in crisis after audit failures at Steinhoff and Tongaat Hulett, has faced criticism for John’s appointment as CEO in June 2020.

South Africa’s Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA) CEO Jenitha John has resigned and a caretaker board has been appointed by South African minister of finance Tito Mboweni.
John resigned due to the persisting negative perception of her connection to agricultural business Tongaat Hulett despite her fully disclosing her role as non-executive directorship before being selected to lead IRBA.
Tongaat Hulett was at the centre of an accounting scandal in 2019 when it declared that its financial result for 2018 were not reliable.
John stated that it would be in the best interest of IRBA to step down, however she has made herself available to the caretaker board over the next three months should they require her assistance. ....

After doing enormous damage to the reputation of the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA) and after widespread condemnation of her appointment, Jenitha John has finally resigned from her ill-fated position as IRBA CEO. The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes John’s departure from the top position of IRBA where she was responsible for rebuilding the image of auditors after the numerous high profile audit scandals of recent years. One of the biggest scandals includes Tongaat Hulett, where she apparently failed in her duties as an auditor to prevent or expose an accounting scandal. ....
