MONTPELIER — The state Emergency Board approved an upgrade in the state’s revenue forecast for fiscal 2021, as the state’s economists said the massive injection of federal spending during the COVID-19 pandemic had resulted in healthier than expected revenues through the first six months of the fiscal year.
The board unanimously approved revenue projections of $2.44 billion for fiscal 2021, $2.57 billion for fiscal 2022 and $2.62 billion in fiscal 2023.
The projection is based on what economist Tom Kavet called “a steady progression of above target performance on a number of key and very large tax sources,” as well as the change in administrations in Washington likely to result in additional coronavirus relief dollars. ....

Opinion: Martin Luther King Jr. Day: San Diegans reflect on his legacy amid racial justice efforts in 2021

Jaelyn Kennedy
Let me first give you the definition of racism.
Racism is prejudice, discrimination or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.
Why did I give you that definition, you may ask? To have a conversation about race in America and America’s progress when it comes to race, we must have a clear understanding of the racism that is very fluent and prevalent in America. When we look at America’s history, the progress we see when it comes down to race since the last Civil Rights Movement is slim to none. Let’s talk about why. We can take moments from 2020 and even the first week of 2021 and compare those to the same actions that were taking place in the 1950s. The reasons for both historic moments are pretty similar, so if America has changed so much in a “positive” way, why are we marching for such similar reasons 70 years late ....

The Hope Dealers: How Clinicians and New Tech Could End Unnecessary PAD Amputations

December 24, 2020
From the heart of the Mississippi Delta, where rates of diabetes and major amputations are among the highest in the nation, to laboratories where researchers ply cutting-edge technologies aimed at minimizing and repairing tissue loss, an unexpected tone has entered the conversation around limb disease: hope.
“They call me a hope dealer,” said Foluso A. Fakorede, MD (Cardiovascular Solutions of Central Mississippi, Cleveland). Born in Nigeria and educated in New Jersey, he felt drawn to work in the Delta by the disproportionately high rates of unnecessary amputations among the community of largely poor people of color. As a Black cardiologist, he also felt an urgency to step up and use his knowledge and connections within the medical community to be perhaps the only health advocate some of his patients had ever encountered. ....

You hear what affairs are saying privately. there s a call for more hard evidence. last week president obama put out the report and i think a lot of people were hoping there would be more specific spirit turned out to be kind of paltry, vague. didn t provide a lot of detail that skeptics were hoping for. that comes from cyber security experts, people who aren t big fans of donald trump. jeffrey carr said it added nothing to the conversation about the extent of russia s meddling. took a listing that a private company had put out of groups that are thought had ties to russia and grouped that under russian intelligence services without providing corroboration or substantiation. a lot of people are worried that the manner in which this information has been shared makes it seem like it s a domestic political operation than foreign policy that russia is a threat. ....
