good afternoon. good afternoon. it s great to see the conversation, everyone having a good time. the food was wonderful. we welcome you again to this .unch panel plenary session i m going to introduce the moderator and the moderator will introduce the panelists. i am happy to introduce our panel moderator. professor mcdowell is the professor of literary studies and the director of the college institute for african-american studies at the university of virginia. she has been a member of the uva her booksnce 1987 and include studies of fiction by african-american women as well as numerous articles and in scholarly publications. professor mcdowell has been extensively involved in editorial projects pertaining to african-american literature. me in welcoming professor deborah mcdowell. this was part of the symposium held at the university of virginia in charlottesville. good morning. in celebration of the bison telling bicentennial, we welcome you to the symposium. universities, slavery, and the public built landscape, presented by the university of virginia commission on slavery and the university, in partnership with the slave dwelling projects fourth annual projects. on vice president and chief officer for diversity and equity, the professor and i cochair the present s cochair the commission on slavery. the slave dwelling project led mr. joe mug gill and board of directors the slave dwelling project brings attention to sites, people, history, and ways in which the slave contributed to building and sustaining this country. i say 70 to 80 because the temperature dropped about 39 last night. i m not totally sure. they said they had experienced. humility and a better appreciation for those who live their daily lives is one intent of such an exp ....

to situate the presidential plantations back into the history of slavery. or to situate slavery back into the history of the presidential plantations. not entirely sure. i went back and forth on how to say that. i m not entirely sure which is the right way to say it. the crucial thing to say is that we are considering the processes that have raised the obvious that heavy raced that have erased obvious location of the enslaved in the histories of the presidencies. everyone here on this panel, and many of you in the audience are involved in efforts that precisely do not assume slavery is some sort of addition or add on to the presidential histories, but the two are inextricable. to that end i m excited to hear each of this afternoon s speakers talk about the work they are undergoing at the presidential plantations. i will introduce all of them now in the order in which they will speak. we planned the presentations to allow for significant time at the end for the panel ....
