CAPITAL CITY HISTORY: Cole County Fairgrounds was first on city's east end

The Cole County Fairgrounds, before the Civil War, were southeast of the city limits. What today is the tree-lined Wagner subdivision was once the site of community picnics, Independence Day and Emancipation Day celebrations and horse racing.
