Northwestern State University music faculty Dr. Dennette Derby McDermott and Dr. Douglas Bakenhus will present a recital on Monday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Limited admission is available for NSU students, faculty and staff only. Social distancing should be observed and masks are required. The concert will livestream at capa.nsula.edu/livestream. The concert features McDermott on all 12 fantasies for solo flute by Telemann. Bakenhus will perform with McDermott on five of the pieces on bassoon. McDermott is professor of flute and coordinator of graduate studies at Northwestern State, where she has taught since 1990. McDermott has performed in the Czech Republic, ....

Christian Friedrich Ruppe wrote his cantatas to benefit an orphan’s home in Leiden. After their initial performances, they remained unheard for 250 years. Ruppe wrote the Christmas and Easter cantatas on this release for the Holy Spirit of Poor Orphans and Children’s Home. The works were not only to be performed to raise funds for the home but were sung by the orphanage choir founded by Ruppe. After the concerts, the music was stored away, only to be rediscovered in 1987. ....
