Tuskegee-born Angela Johnson named Harper Lee Award winner


Angela Johnson, the 2021 Harper Lee Award for Alabama s Distinguished Writer recipient, was born in Tuskegee, though her name may not be as immediately recognizable in her birth state as that of previous recipients, such as Rick Bragg, Fannie Flagg, Gay Talese, Winston Groom or Mark Childress.
That s a knowledge gap the prestigious award should help address, said Jeanie Thompson, executive director of the Alabama Writers Forum.
I am very happy for Angela Johnson to be returning to Alabama virtually, Thompson said, speaking of the 2021 Zoom version of the Monroeville Literary Festival, March 4-6, so that we can make her work more known to families and readers in Alabama. ....

City of Montgomery Announces Winners in Virtual Contest Celebrating MLK's 92nd Birthday

The City of Montgomery on Monday announced the winners of a virtual contest created to commemorate the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The 2021 MLK Student Perspectives Contest asked Montgomery students to submit a brief video presentation of their favorite quote from one of Dr. King’s speeches, sermons or interviews and then explain why that quote resonates with them today.
“We congratulate this year’s MLK Student Perspectives Contest winners and applaud the overall quality of entries,” Mayor Steven L. Reed said. “Each student who participated articulated a deep understanding of Dr. King’s vision and how it relates to building a better community today. I look forward to honoring these future leaders at the next Council Meeting.” ....
