Photo: WINA CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – City Council will likely decide at its June 7th meeting to appropriate $4.2-million more of VDOT funds toward the Belmont Bridge replacement project, precipitated by larger-than-estimated materials costs in the lowest of 6 bids received. Project manager Jeanette Janiczek says costs of six aspects of the now $35.4-million proposed bridge are higher than city engineers projected, pumped up by the rise of prices for materials during the pandemic. Those items are the retaining wall treatment, lighting, precast girders, bridge demolition, temporary shoring, and the steel girders. Janiczek says they looked into cost reductions, but those would require re-bidding the project that would delay the project by another year while falling short of commitments made to the public and Board of Architectural Review.
