A building that honors Strom Thurmond, the late segregationist U.S. senator, is among those that advocates would like to rename.
A commission at the University of South Carolina recommended on Friday that the names of 11 people who were slaveowners, fought for the Confederacy, or held racist beliefs be removed from campus buildings, including that of the late U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond, who supported segregation for much of his political career.
To many on the flagship campus, in Columbia, it felt like a victory at first. But there’s no political path forward to actually removing Thurmond’s name or any others, at least for now. ....

The South Carolina Supreme Court has now heard arguments on why the state’s Heritage Act may be unconstitutional. 
It’s the law that prevents historic monuments and memorials from being changed or removed without approval from two-thirds of the General Assembly. After Tuesday s hearing, some are hopeful that could soon change.
I think our judges are leaning into seeing that the Heritage Act in and of itself is just unconstitutional pointblank period, said Vice President of Repeal the Heritage Act, Jazmyne McCrae. Their own lawyers on the other side are unable to really even nail down why it was constitutional. ....

Apr. 20 COLUMBIA, S.C. The guilty verdict in the Minneapolis murder trial of ex-police officer Derek Chauvin, charged with killing George Floyd, sent shock waves rippling through South Carolina on Tuesday.
Cheers and chants of Black lives matter erupted outside the Minneapolis court house the moment the verdict was read shortly after 5 p.m. Reactions from South Carolina leaders began pouring in online almost immediately.
