When the Ford government announced on April 16 it was giving police officers additional powers to stop, question and issue fines to people who violated the province’s newly announced stay-at-home orders, reaction from the London police services board was swift.
Board chair Javeed Sukhera was on the phone with police Chief Stephen Williams shortly after the unexpected declaration, hashing through what London’s response should be. Local police forces say they will not randomly stop people

A day after sweeping new COVID-19 restrictions were announced, police forces across Ontario, including services throughout Southwestern Ontario, have stated they will not randomly stop people.
The province’s Solicitor General, Sylvia Jones, granted the authority as part of the province’s bid to put a lid on soaring COVID-19 case counts in Ontario.
For the chair of London’s Police Services Board- it hit close to home.

Woodstock police will not conduct random COVID-19 stops: Chief

Woodstock police officers will not conduct random stops of citizens out of their homes during the COVID-19 lockdown, police chief Daryl Longworth said Saturday, joining a growing number of police forces pushing back against the measure.
In a statement, Longworth said that while they are waiting more information on the new powers afforded to police to enforce provincial stay-at-home orders, officers will be focused on “engagement and education.”

“We will not be conducting random vehicle or individual stops,” Longworth said. 
“We will review those new regulations to determine the most appropriate enforcement response for the people in this community. Ontario reports 4,362 COVID-19 cases and 34 deaths on Saturday


Saturday s cases are down from a record-high of 4,812 on Friday a slight reprieve after three straight days of new peaks. However, the seven-day average continued to climb, reaching 4,370 on Saturday, a slight increase from 4,292 on Friday.
The latest figures include 1,162 in Toronto, 936 in Peel Region, 430 in York Region, 251 in Ottawa, and 301 in Durham, according to Health Minister Christine Elliott.
Elliott said 3,751,316 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered in Ontario as of 8
p.m. on Friday.
Hospitals continue to fill with COVID-19 patients
The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 in Ontario increased by 110 to a new high of 2,065 on Saturday. ....
