Man found guilty of Brunswick child sex crimes sentenced

A Brunswick County man was convicted of several rape, sex offense and incest charges Tuesday afternoon.
A Brunswick County jury found John Christian Marston guilty of sexually abusing a young girl in a trial that began May 24, according to a Tuesday afternoon news release. The abuse started when the victim was 10 years old and continued for several years.
Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Jason C. Disbrow sentenced Marston up to 147 years in prison.
The Brunswick District Attorney s Office and the Brunswick County Sheriff s Office was not immediately available for comment.

Brunswick man found guilty murder in 2017 fatal shooting

A 24-year-old Brunswick man was found guilty of murder in a 2017 shooting.
A Brunswick County jury found Eugene Anthwon Powell guilty on one count of first-degree murder, according to a Thursday news release from the Brunswick County district attorney s office.
On Dec. 8, 2017, Powell shot and killed Anthony Scott Beers in an area known as “the quarters” in the Longwood community of Brunswick County, the release said. Powell evaded law enforcement for four days and fled to South Carolina before returning to North Carolina where he was arrested by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office in an apartment in Shallotte on Dec. 12, 2017. ....

According to a press statement, “All Superior Court and District Court proceedings be scheduled or rescheduled for a date no sooner than January 15, 2021, unless:
The proceeding will be conducted remotely;
That the proceeding is necessary to preserve the right to due process of law (e.g., a first appearance or bond hearing, the appointment of counsel for an indigent defendant, a probation hearing, a probable cause hearing, etc.);
The hearing is for the purpose of obtaining emergency relief (e.g., a domestic violence protection order, temporary restraining order, juvenile custody order, judicial consent to juvenile medical treatment order, civil commitment order, etc.); or ....
