Not all COVID measures were unnecessary I read Jean Karl Soler’s opinion piece ‘From COVID-19 to monkeypox: avoid repeating the mistakes’ (Ju ....
More vaccination inequities Further to my letter of April 20, I am obliged to write again about the seemingly ongoing inequitable vaccine roll-out strategy, in the hope of getting some answers. Malta boasts being at the forefront of the vaccination drive in Europe, yet it is neither transparent nor fair in its efforts. On Friday, the programme opened to those aged over 40 and two of my 40-year-old friends were able to book their vaccinations that same day, which was great news. Imagine my surprise to learn their second dose is only three weeks after their first. This means most 40- to 50-year-olds in Malta will be fully vaccinated by mid to late May while those of us in our 60s and 70s will be waiting until June or even, in some cases I know of, July. ....
Malta’s COVID vaccination programme Further to my letter published on March 12, I feel compelled to write again about the complete lack of transparency in Malta’s COVID vaccination programme. The order in which people are being vaccinated does not seem to follow any logic. Nobody begrudges frontline workers being prioritised but when we read about construction companies and even court registrars demanding priority one cannot help but think powerful lobby groups are having a disproportionate impact. It has been consistently proven that age is the single biggest risk factor with COVID. Meanwhile, those in public-facing employment are at no greater risk than the wider population in their age cohort, which is mitigated further by COVID safe protocols at work. Yet, prioritisation by age is not being fairly implemented, despite public declarations to the contrary. ....
A long-term vision for Gozo In his Talking Point (March 11), Revel Barker raises the possibility of vaccinating the entire population of Gozo against COVID within a period of three days, presumably in order to achieve immediate herd immunity on Malta’s sister island. In the unlikely event that such a policy ever saw the light of day, it would only induce claims of selfishness culminating in long-term resentment towards the indigenous population. The battle against COVID is proving long and hard, however, none of us are safe until all of us are safe and we are quite literally all in this together. ....
