Calls to end town road closure 'chaos'

Janet Burnage said shutting the key route had led to other nearby roads becoming “clogged” with traffic.
Her damning verdict on the closure, which started on July 1 in a bid to help people socially distance by providing extra space for pedestrians, comes as calls grow to reopen the road.
At a recent Romsey Town Council planning meeting, on February 25, councillors unanimously agreed in a discussion the scheme should be stopped.
A Hampshire County Council consultation on traffic measures in Romsey has proposed keeping The Hundred closed and to create a one way system on nearby Portersbridge Street, which has also led to fears from residents about a new “rat run” route. ....

A ROMSEY leader has stressed the public s safety must come first after an annual carnival was cancelled amid coronavirus fears.
The Romsey Carnival, which sees a procession of floats dominate the town in July, was called off in an announcement on Tuesday (March 9).
In a Facebook post, the chairman and committee said with deep regret they had to cancel this year s festivities.
The difficult decision was made because the team was unsure what coronavirus restrictions will be in place in July.
Town and borough councillor, Nik Daas, said the committee was right to cancel the event, believing revellers should be protected from the deadly bug. ....

LEADERS across Romsey have reacted to Beggars Fair being cancelled for the second time amid coronavirus fears.
The summer event was scheduled to happen on July 10, but was called off on Tuesday night in a committee Zoom meeting.
Community leaders were disappointed the festival has been scrapped for this year, but believe it is the right call.
Borough and town councillor Nik Daas said: Beggars Fair is a regional event that attracts so many people from different parts of the south.
To have that movement of people in the summer is too close to the current situation we are in now and, at the end of the day, we have to put safety first. ....

Romsey leaders condemn criminals after Bradbeers Department Store is burgled

LEADERS across Romsey have condemned a group of criminals who burgled a department store this week.
Hampshire police confirmed an investigation was launched to find the culprits after they forced their way into Bradbeers Department Store, Bell Street, on Monday between 5am and 5.30am, and stole an unknown quantity of perfume.
Officers revealed a Land Rover Discovery was spotted parked at the rear of the store between the public toilets and the back of Boots the chemist.
Residents with information are now being urged to come forward in a bid to catch the offenders.
Cllr Sandra Gidley, who represents Romsey Abbey on Test Valley Borough Council, slammed the gang for targeting the business, fearing it could encourage others to follow suit. ....
