An SLAF PT-6 Aircraft which left China Bay in Trincomalee, made a crash-landing in a paddy field near the Janaranjana Wewa, Sooriyapura in Kantale yesterday killing its pilot.
Police said only the pilot was on board the craft at the time of crash-landing.
Meanwhile, SLAF Spoekseman said the aircraft went missing from the radar screen last afternoon.
It was reported that when the aircraft crashed, a group of farmers who were nearby had attempted to save the pilot. Police said the body of the pilot which was strapped to the seat of the aircraft, was removed to the Trincomalee Hospital.

Dec 15, Colombo: The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has announced that a PT6 trainer aircraft belonging to the No. 1 Flying Training Wing at SLAF Academy China Bay has crashed into a canal near the Janaranjana Wewa in Sooriyapura, Kantale.
The pilot who was trapped inside the craft has died, the police said.
The crash site is approximately 14 nautical miles away from SLAF Academy China Bay and the pilot of the aircraft was a trainee Officer Cadet who was on a solo training mission.
“The aircraft which took off from the China Bay airfield at around 1305 Hrs today had lost radio communication with the air traffic control tower at China Bay at approximately 1315 Hrs before being reported to have crashed,” SLAF said.
