so they realized okay, we are not going to win this way so what do you do then? well, the koch s are very smart. they are terrific businessmen, both graduates of mit and they are engineers and they went back to thedrawing board to figure out the new model . and in the years after that, soon after that they began to draw up a blueprint for how you could do sort of an assembly line to change american politics, even if you couldn t win the popular vote to go there, they follow the footsteps of a couple other major multimillionaires and billionaires on the right who were also funding this project and they figured out that from their standpoint politicians are just actors who are spouting lines andthe key to changing america is to write the script . how do you get to write the script? well, you have to change kind of the whole way that elite opinion is formed in the country. there happened to have been right around the same time, a little bit earlier,

[applause] it s such an honor for me to be here. i would like to thank the library of congress and each one of you who has come, don t be worried that i m a black belt. you re safe. i have a long history in journalism, but i wanted to start by explaining what interests me most as a writer. i have a always been interestedn the literature of witness, you know, witnessing the women movement and sort of political scandal in texas in which there are no end and a lot of dealer scanneddals scandals and i like interviewing people face-to-face and holding space for other people s stories. it gives me a chance to reflect. the second thing that has been have always informed my work is the subject articulated in the biblical book

[laughter] sometimes my mind switches and i apologize. this was the plan to deal with the dramatic social turmoil in columbia with the drug cartel and the violence was significant and the previous administration they made a significant effort to provide technical support military support economic support, the president made a real commitment to open up the economy to allow people to liberate the economy so that it would be more economic opportunity. and it was a huge victory. we should apply that same type of approach right now. the president has not proposed a. i haven t seen the details of it, for the northern tribal states and central america which have a very similar situation perhaps even
