COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ) The University of Missouri began coronavirus testing this week and has nearly 800 students signed up for appointments that begin Sunday. The plan is to use federal CARES Act funding for the return to campus testing. MU spokesman Christian Basi said how much the program will cost depends on the number of tests needed. How much we have to use will depend on how many tests we have, with the majority of students getting tested at home that does not affect us at all in terms of cost, he said. The arrival testing for this week is for students who live on campus. Undergraduates who live off-campus are eligible and encouraged to get tested next week but it is not a requirement. ....

Testing will be mandatory for approximately 6,300 undergraduate students living in university sponsored or owned housing. Spokesperson Christian Basi says the goal is to prevent the spread of the disease but also to glean information that could inform safety protocols. “That’s part of what we’re trying to learn ourselves: Is there information that we can learn from this arrival testing that might drive our strategies,” he says. Students have until January 4 to submit their COVID-19 arrival testing plan to the university. The options are to schedule a free test on campus in January or to take a test from home up to five days ahead of the move. Both PCR and rapid antigen viral testing results will be accepted. ....
