There is a drug strategy in the new five-year plan, with other aspects of police work also included, such as an enhanced visibility strategy, a traffic safety strategy and internal strategies to enhance and improve the WPS, as well as strategies to improve community engagement. This document is the result of work by Chief Jamie Blunden in conjunction with the Weyburn Police Commission, with many hours of planning and thinking put into the overall plan before it was released to the public. As a five-year strategic plan, there are many issues involved around the role of the police in the community, but the one regarding drug abuse in Weyburn will be getting tested right away. ....
In recent years, cocaine was prevalent in the community, but in the last few months, any overdose calls involve the use of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Since the start of 2021, the Weyburn police has responded 11 times to calls to assist the Weyburn EMS on a drug overdose but as Chief Blunden noted, they don’t even hear about most overdoses. In one particularly eventful weekend in January, there were two deaths and one overdose where the person was able to recover. More recently, WPS had three overdose calls from Feb. 19-21, and one person was taken to hospital in Weyburn then Regina in critical condition. ....
“We want to ensure Weyburn remains the best place to live and this plan is an excellent tool for our members to remain accountable,” said Chief Jamie Blunden. “The plan identifies key strategies for us to measure ourselves and keeps us committed to ensuring a safe and health community.” The three main goals of the 2021 plan are: • Ensuring a safer community for all; • Healthy organization; and • Community engagement. These goals and objectives were established through strategic planning with the Weyburn Police Board and consultation with community stakeholders. Major themes identified were drug issues within the community, employee and financial health within the WPS and transparency in the community. ....
