Mahoosuc Bird Notes: Baby bird rescue

“When you see a baby hummingbird that you’ve been caring for fly for the first time, it’s amazing,” says Jody Giddings when I spoke to her recently about her 10 years of experience as a wildlife rehabilitator. Jody is the founder of Sunday River Wildlife that opened this past December in Newry. Sunday River Wildlife’s mission it to help native Maine wildlife including baby chipmunks, turtles, weasels, and even bats. Birds, including tiny hummingbirds (photo by Jody Giddings), are a specialty. “At first, they don’t know what they are doing, but when a hummingbird zips up and hovers for the first time, I swear they get a look on their little faces that says, ‘Wow, look what I can do’.” Jody says, when that happens, she knows these little acrobats will soon be ready to be released into the wild. ....

BETHEL   ” The Valentine Farm Birding Trail is a perfect way for people to get to see some our superstars and understand how important our region is for healthy birds both here and from other parts of the world,” James Reddoch, an avid birder and part-time Albany Township resident, said.
The soon to be birding trail, located off the North Road in Bethel, will officially open on Saturday, May 15, following a ribbon cutting in the morning at the Valentine Farm.
Over the past few years, birding has become an increasingly popular activity, leading to more birding trails popping up all over the country.  With the trail at Valentine Farm, not only will there be another place for people to search for birds, but this one will have plenty of tools to help guide those just getting into the activity of birding. ....

Mahoosuc Bird Notes: Birds of Maine

I’ve spent the holidays enjoying a gift my wife gave me, Birds of Maine. This book was recently published by Princeton University Press and Nuttall Ornithological Club with support from Maine Audubon and the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund. It provides detailed accounts about the 464 species of birds that have been found in Maine over the last 70 years. It picks up where Ralph Palmer’s book, Maine Birds published in 1949, left off. The book is a work of Peter Vickery who either wrote or collected the data for this massive work. His wife, colleagues and friends completed the work after his death in 2017. ....
