Saturday Recap: Syracuse Holds off Vermont, Maryland Runs Past Johns Hopkins

After taking down ACC rival Virginia Cavaliers by ten goals last week, the Syracuse Orange had to hold off a feisty Vermont Catamounts squad.
The Catamounts dominated the faceoff dot with Tommy Burke going 24-for-34 (70%) on the day. They also won the ground ball battle (42-29) and went 20-for-22 in the clearing game while Syracuse went 23-for-28. Vermont also outshot Syracuse 55-32 and put 33 of their shots on cage. Syracuse put 29 shots on cage.
Despite the edge that the Catamounts were able to gain throughout the course of the game, the Orange prevailed and secure the 17-13 victory. Stephen Rehfuss led the Syracuse offense with eight points (2G/6A) while Owen Hiltz had four goals and one assist. Drake Porter made 20 saves with a 60% save percentage. ....

Few people in lacrosse possess a better sense of perspective than Denver coach Bill Tierney. So back in the latter stages of autumn, when it was anyone’s guess just what the season would look like, it was apt to ask him just what 2021 would bring for the sport.
“It could be the greatest year ever of lacrosse because of the talent that is now five years deep instead of four,” Tierney said. “It could be the biggest disappointment ever if we don’t have a season for those fifth-year guys who got shut out of one last year.” ....
