Candidates vying for Matungu and Kabuchai parliamentary by-elections wrapped up their campaigns yesterday and shifted focus to the elections tomorrow.
Although the contest has been touted as a battle for national political stalwarts out to test their popularity ahead of the 2022 presidential elections, there are many issues that will determine the winners.
Clan loyalty, the welfare of sugar farmers due to mismanagement of Mumias Sugar company, money and 2022 succession politics could determine the outcome in Matungu by-election according to political commentator Martin Andati. ....

All set for Matungu, Kabuchai by-elections on Thursday

Currently, the constituency has at least 62,386 registered voters who are expected to cast their ballots on March 4.
The constituency has five wards namely Namamali, Koyonzo, Mayoni, Kholera and Khalaba with a total of 116 polling stations will be used in all five wards.
Dr Joseph Amukoya became the first MP for Matungu after he won the 1997 parliamentary elections on a Kanu ticket.
But in 2002, Dr Amukoya lost to David Were who rode in National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) wave.
Were successfully defended the seat in 2007 and 2013 on two different party tickets.
He vied on the ODM ticket in 2007 and managed to secure the seat in 2013 as a Ford Kenya candidate. ....

The two Western by-elections in Matungu and Kabuchai have turned into a popularity contest for top politicians eyeing State House in the 2022 General Election.
Focus in the race has shifted to Deputy President William Ruto, ODM leader Raila Odinga and Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi, as their candidates face off in the polls set for Thursday.
Dr Ruto, who has fielded candidates in both elections under the United Democratic Movement (UDA), is seeking to gauge his popularity after making forays in the region that has at least 1.9 million registered voters. ....

Why Kabuchai and Matungu mini polls crucial for top rivals

The March 4 by-elections in Matungu and Kabuchai constituencies now appear to be test-runs for top political stalwarts, as they buckle up for next year s General Election.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA), associated with Deputy President William Ruto, has fielded candidates in both mini polls, while the DP has been frequenting Western Kenya to market his presidential bid.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s ODM is also trying its luck in Matungu, despite a major onslaught from its National Super Alliance (Nasa) partner Amani National Congress (ANC), which is backed by Ford-Kenya.
While ANC has sponsored a candidate in Matungu, it is backing a Ford-Kenya candidate in Kabuchai, which is Senator Moses Wetang’ula’s base. ....

Bonchari MP John Oroo Oyioka passed away on Monday evening, February 15, after a long illness.
The family confirmed that Oyioka died at the Aga Khan hospital, Kisumu County, where he had been admitted for some time.
The Gusii legislator was elected to parliament in 2013 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after the High Court considered a petition he had filed against then winner Zebedeo Opore. The judges nullified Opore s victory under election malpractice laws.
