After seven years as a City Council member, Ritchie Torres is headed to Washington, D.C. as the first openly gay Afro-Latino to be elected to Congress. He will be the first new representative of the 15th congressional district in the South Bronx in more than a generation, succeeding Congressman Jose Serrano who is retiring after 30 years in office. 
Just ahead of Christmas, Gothamist/WNYC sat down with the 32-year-old for an “exit interview” about his time as city lawmaker, what he hopes to accomplish when he gets to Congress, his views on “the Squad,” and how he’s playing the “long-game” for his constituents in the South Bronx. ....

Councilman Questions Pace Of NYPD's Bias Investigations


A City Councilman has bluntly questioned the NYPD’s commitment to rooting out discrimination and outright racial animus within its ranks. 
Councilman Ritchie Torres said the department’s failure to fire a commanding officer more than five weeks after an investigation revealed he was behind hundreds of crass postings on a quasi-public police message board risked further compromising the NYPD’s already tenuous relationship with certain communities.

The officer, Deputy Inspector James Kobel, formerly the commanding officer of the department’s Office of Equal Employment Opportunity, is suspected of being behind more than 500 virulently racist, misogynistic and anti-Semitic postings under the online persona “Clouseau” on a message board populated mostly by current and retired officers. ....

New York City Councilman Ritchie Torres (D-Bronx) wants to know why an NYPD inspector who allegedly posted racist remarks on an online forum is still on the job.
Torres, who will be sworn in as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives next month, accused Deputy Inspector James Kobel of making the heinous comments last month in a scathing review of the Law Enforcement Rant, a website frequented by NYPD officers. ....
