Winnipeg’s Concourse Aboriginal Gallery, located in the Exchange District, is permanently closing due to the COVID-19 economic downturn.
After 45 years in the art business, owner Allan Shafer, 94, has decided enough is enough. The former hotelier and investor told the 
Winnipeg Sun on Thursday he decided to open Concourse because selling and framing art seemed easier than running a hotel.

“During the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s it was good,” he said. “And then, because of the pandemic, it started to slow down. That’s why I’m getting out and donating everything to Sscope Inc. (formerly Neechi Commons). They have beds for the homeless, and food for them. They also have a store, and now they are going to have an art ....

Preventing food deserts: Group trying to help rural grocers

There is a trend of rural and small-town grocery stores in Kansas closing, and a group called the Rural Grocery Initiative has noticed.
“Over a 10-year period, from 2008 to 2018, we tracked 54 rural grocery store closures,” said David Procter, co-founder of the Rural Grocery Initiative. 
One of those was Weaver Grocers in Hesston, which closed its doors in April 2018.
The city council of Hesston has had discussions in the past two years of what to do but to date, no one has stepped forward to fill the void. Grocery shoppers in Hesston now can head to Newton, Buhler, Inman, Moundridge or Goessel.  ....
