Plainfield NJ cop gets new trial on hostile workplace claim

MyCentralJersey.com PLAINFIELD – Because of the judge s behavior in the first trial, a retired city police officer will get a new trial on his lawsuit alleging a hostile workplace in the police department.  Russel Gottlick, who joined the police department in 1992 and retired in 2019, filed suit in 2018 against the city, former Police Director Carl Riley and Lt. Craig Venson, claiming he was the victim of a hostile work environment because of his age. Gottlick is 62. A Superior Court jury in 2019 did not find in favor of Gottlick s lawsuit, but a state appellate panel on Wednesday ruled that Superior Court Judge James Hely s behavior during the trial could have left the jury with the impression that the case was a waste of time that did not warrant much consideration.
