That matter, along with the fact that there are thousands of years of history amongst these many tribes and groups, means that there is a wealth of tales and records of Native American leaders. Given the wide array of cultures involved, it s also worth noting that not every one of these leaders were men. In fact, as the American Museum of Natural History reports, the division of labor by gender often varied quite a bit depending on the tribe in question. Few tribes, even after contact with European settlers, fell totally in line with the hierarchical and patriarchal roles espoused by many whites.
