May 1 Seven deputies from the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Department killed unarmed Andrew Brown Jr. in his car next to his home here April 21. The deputies jumped out of a pickup truck with weapons drawn and rushed forward. Fearing for his life, Brown tried to drive forward out of his driveway and away. Deputy sheriffs fired into his car from behind, killing him.

Vehicular traffic was rerouted in Elizabeth City, N.C. as the family of Andrew Brown Jr. were to be shown bodycam footage of his fatal shooting by a Pasquotank County sheriff s deputy. Authorities in North Carolina are bracing for possible protests and unrest over the fatal shooting of Andrew Brown Jr., by sheriff s deputies last week.  Brown, 42, was shot in Pasquotank County but authorities have offered few details about the April 21 incident, which occurred during the execution of a search warrant. His family viewed snippets of bodycam footage Monday and later said only 20 seconds of video from one camera was all they were allowed to see. 

Lawyers decry delay in release of shooting footage as Elizabeth City declares state of emergency

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — An attorney for Andrew Brown said Pasquotank County sheriff’s deputies shot the Elizabeth City man multiple times while he sat in his vehicle with his hands on the steering wheel. Attorney Chantel Lassiter addressed a crowd in Elizabeth City on Monday afternoon after viewing 20 seconds of body camera footage along with the slain man’s family. She said the footage showed deputies blocking Brown in his driveway while serving a warrant and approaching his car while firing. Brown did not move toward them or use a weapon, and deputies fired AR 223 semi-automatic rifles and Glock 17 pistols as he attempted to back away, Lassiter said.
