But odds are you ve never seen one in the U.S., unless it was a visitor from Mexico where the marque has had a presence. And if you have seen one it was likely a more recent model not something from the 1990s. The marque itself, Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo, has had an interesting history, having started out as a state-owned automaker launched by a Spanish government institute. An alliance with FIAT and its licensed models defined the marque s early decades. Then in 1982 SEAT entered into a partnership with Volkswagen. VW bought a majority stake in SEAT within a few years, with the automaker becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of the VW Group. Among other things, this meant starting in the early 1990s SEAT s own models were subtle but still recognizable reskins of Volkswagen vehicles like the Golf and the Polo. ....
